Top 10 tips for a greener new year

Chris Toynbeehttp://www.snaffleup.co.uk is an online resource that gives people with unwanted but useful household items an opportunity to donate them to other people instead of throwing them away.

It's the new year and most of us will be figuring out our new years resolutions. As well as the usual work out at the gym, lose weight and get a new job, how about living a greener lifestyle? Here are our top ten tips to help you!

  1. Switch to a green electricity supplier. Ecotricity and Good Energy are two of the best. The more consumers that sign up to renewable tariffs, the greater the proportion of the UK's electricity that will have to be sourced from renewables.
  2. Whenever a light bulb runs out, replace it with a CFL or LED. These last much longer than incandescent bulbs and use a fraction of the electricity to run.
  3. Say no to plastic bags and reuse your own shopping bags instead. Over 15 billion bags are given away every year - most of which end up in the landfill.
  4. Be a savvy shopper - ask yourself if the packaging can be reused, recycled or composted. If not, is there an alternative product you could buy?
  5. Ditch the bottled water. Treat yourself to a reusable bottle from One Green Bottle or We Want Tap. Of 13 billion plastic bottles sold in the UK last year, only 10% were recycled. The rest ended up in landfill.
  6. Use the shower instead of a bath, or bathe with a friend :) A shower uses around one third of the water of a bath. Be aware though, that a power shower can use MORE water and electricity than a bath!
  7. Eliminate junk mail. Sign up for the mail preference service: www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr. About 21 billion items (550,000 tonnes) of junk mail are sent out every year in the UK.
  8. Install a couple of water butts and use collected water on your plants, to wash your car or clean garden furniture. Washing your car with a hose uses around 450 litres of water - more than the average household uses in a day.
  9. Bye bye standby. We've all heard it a hundred times; switch appliances off at the wall instead of leaving on standby. You could save around £38 per year on your bills, which equates to 630 kg of CO2.
  10. And finally, and most importantly use SnaffleUp to recycle your unwanted Christmas presents!

Feeling cold in Kent?

Anyone feeling the cold in Kent might be interested in a recently added item a Sky Blue Reebok Beanie. It should keep your head warm until Spring comes! If the beanie isn't to your taste then check out the other items available in Kent from our newly created Kent items map.

Remember to delete collected items

Please don't forget to delete your old collected items. A few members have expressed their frustration in seeing items that have already been collected appearing on the site.

Thanks to Mrs Green from MyZeroWaste.com for providing these tips. MyZeroWaste.com is a family blog about reducing the amount of waste they send to landfill each week.

Wishing you happy recycling for 2009!

Many thanks,
