Is spring cleaning bad for the environment?

It's that time of year when the blackbirds chase one another down the garden for a bit of hanky panky and the sunshine shows up all the dirty streaks on your windows.

If you've been a bit lazy in the housework department, now is the time to don your pinny, roll up your sleeves and get to work.

But what about all the chemicals, the plastic packaging and the cost of different products for different jobs?

Never fear, Mrs Green is here to help you green up your home and environment with just white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda). You can buy both products from supermarkets, health food shops and in bulk from online stores.

My motto is simplify, simplify, simplify. You don't really need a different product for your work surfaces, floors, bath, toilet and sinks. It's all marketing hype that does nothing for you other than fill your home with chemicals and empty your bank balance.

White Vinegar

  1. White vinegar is a traditional cleaning product that has been used for centuries. Use it on your windows, mirrors and glass. Make up a 50 / 50 mix in a spray bottle with white vinegar and cold water and use with an Ecloth for effortless shine.
  2. Add a couple of drops of lavender and tea tree essential oils to the bottle and you've got yourself an antibacterial all purpose cleaner. Use on kitchen work surfaces, kitchen tables, the floor and it's safe enough for the high chair.
  3. Put a cup of white vinegar in your washing machine fabric softener drawer for a cheap, scent free softener. As the clothes dry, the smell of vinegar dissipates - I promise you won't smell like a fish and chip shop! It's great for people who have chemical sensitivities or eczema.
  4. To clean any hard floor, put a tablespoon of white vinegar into a bucket of hot water and mop away any grease or grime.
  5. Pour white vinegar into the toilet bowl and leave overnight to dissolve lime scale.

Bicarbonate of Soda

  1. Cleaning the oven - we all hate it and we leave it for as long as we can get away with. But don't be tempted to buy oven cleaners - they, along with drain cleaners, are one of the most toxic products available for the home. To clean your oven, sprinkle with a thick layer of bicarbonate of soda, spray with water, leave to work (overnight if you wish) and scrape away all the grease the following morning. Rinse well with warm water.
  2. Sinks, bath tubs, hobs, and work surfaces can all be cleaned with bicarbonate of soda. Apply to a damp sponge and scour away. It won't scratch delicate surfaces but will make your taps shine! Finish with a vinegar / water spray to get rid of any powdery residue.
  3. After cleaning the fridge (and yes you can use bicarbonate of soda followed by a vinegar and water rinse for this too!) put a small bowl of bicarbonate of soda in the fridge to reduce odours.
